He earned his MBBS, FCPS, FRCP, MD, and PhD, and completed advanced nephrology training in the United Kingdom at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Returning to Bangladesh in 1981, he joined the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR) as a specialist teacher and quickly transformed the nephrology landscape. He performed the country’s first live-related kidney transplant in October 1981 and later introduced hemodialysis in 1986 and CAPD in 1987. His pioneering efforts laid the foundation for modern nephrology care in Bangladesh.

As a visionary leader, Prof. Dr. Harun-Ur-Rashid established the Kidney Foundation of Bangladesh in 2003, a not-for-profit hospital and institute dedicated to treating kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation. Under his guidance, the Kidney Foundation Hospital & Research Institute became the largest dialysis and transplant center in the nation.
